Projects

This section shows the range of local initiatives and projects happening around the Firth of Clyde area.  Please let us know of any projects you think should be featured here.

The Scottish Sustainable Marine Environment Initiative (SSMEI) is a Scottish Executive led initiative to trial different methods of managing the marine and coastal environment.  SSMEI aims to develop and evaluate approaches to the sustainable management of Scotland's marine resources. The Clyde Pilot is one of four projects being implemented under Phase III of the SSMEI. The objectives of the Clyde Pilot are to develop and deliver more integrated and sustainable management of the marine and coastal areas of the Firth of Clyde.

The SSMEI Clyde Pilot is a partnership project funded by the Scottish Executive, Scottish Natural Heritage (SNH), Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) and the Glasgow and the Clyde Valley Structure Plan Joint Committee (GCVSPJC), with additional funds from LEADER+. The project is guided by a steering group representing the main stakeholders and regulators operating within the Firth of Clyde.

The Clyde Pilot Project is linked to the work of the Firth of Clyde Forum.  The Clyde Pilot began in August this year (2006) with the employment of one full-time and one part-time member of staff.  Over the following three years, these Clyde Pilot Project staff will develop a marine spatial plan for the Firth of Clyde area and then trial its voluntary implementation.

Waterfront Regeneration

There is huge development activity along much of the Firth of Clyde from Glasgow City Centre to the Erskine Bridge, Inverclyde, Ardrossan and the Helensburgh areas to name only a few.  Here are a few links to further information on some of these.  More to follow.

The Clyde Waterfront project is the biggest regeneration scheme in Scotland and aims to transform areas around the River Clyde into a vibrant area to live and work. As well as business, leisure and housing developments near the river, the plans also include proposals for improved transport links and new bridges.

This is a Glasgow City Council run site for all Clyde Users.  It contains information on events, navigation, safety, developments and also links to many other useful sites.  Follow this link to the site.

If you are in the marine business, enjoy boating or are a watersports enthusiast, the Green Blue has practical advice and information to help you think and act in an environmentally conscious way. Inland or coastal, individual or boating business, there is something here for you in this initiative run by the British Marine Federation and Royal Yachting Association.  Follow this link to the Green Blue website just launched in September.

Individual Blue Flag campaign

Private leisure craft owners in Britain, Denmark, Norway and Sweden are being encouraged to take an active role in cleaning up the North Sea with the introduction of the Individual Blue Flag Award.

A spin-off of the Blue Flag Campaign for cleaner beaches, this international campaign has been set up by the non-profit Foundation for Environmental Education. Participating boat owners sign an environmental code of conduct, which aims to reduce levels of waste in the North Sea and help protect the marine environment.

Firth of Clyde Shoreline Archaeological Survey

In 2002, the Firth of Clyde Forum and The Scottish Archaeological and Paleoenvironmental (SCAPE) Trust were  awarded a grant to survey the archaeology and geomorphology of the Firth of Clyde shoreline. The project has been funded by Historic Scotland and the Firth of Clyde Forum and started at the end of 2002.  Previously in Phase I, areas of the Ayrshire coastline, the Cowal Peninsula and the whole of the Isle of Cumbrae were surveyed.   The Phase II survey, carried out in winter 2003/spring 2004, covered the the Inner Clyde, the lower tidal reaches of the Clyde and the Isle of Bute.  The Phase II report is available and should be on the site soon once we've solved the technicalities of uploading such a large file.  In the meantime, please contact the Forum if you'd like more information.

Phase III Shorewatch Work

Each phase of the project has involved a Shorewatch component whereby local enthusiasts are encouraged to document sites of identified significance with respect to the archaeological record of the coast. Volunteers are trained to record archaeological information and to monitor the effects of erosion.  If you are interested in being involved with the ongoing survey work, please get in touch with the Firth of Clyde Forum or see the Shorewatch website for general Shorewatch information.

If there are locations that have been singled out as being of local (or even national) significance then the project will aim to undertake a more detailed survey using erosion monitoring pegs. There is also the possibility of excavation if this is deemed necessary. The survey areas are shown on the map in maroon.

Marine Litter Projects

The Firth of Clyde Forum promotes the Marine Conservation Society's Adopt-A-Beach scheme and their annual Beach Watch in September each year.  For both, community groups are asked to volunteer to clean their beaches and also to keep a record of rubbish found which contributes to the Marine Conservation's Society annual report on marine litter pollution.  Please see their website for further details.

The GRAB (Group for Recycling in Argyll and Bute) Trust, through their Beaches and Marine Litter Project, also assists local communities to carry out beach cleans in Argyll and Bute.  Contact them here
